Hemp Rope

Hemp Rope (2021)

Hemp Rope (2021) explores the complexity of human relationships—whether between family, lovers, or friends. When two people begin to understand each other, an emotional bond is gradually formed. However, this connection often starts with an unbalanced power dynamic, where one person takes a dominant role and the other becomes more dependent. Over time, their behaviors and thought patterns may overlap to the point of merging into a single “individuality.” This stage, while seemingly intimate, is ultimately unhealthy. One person often loses their sense of self, becoming overly reliant on the other, and in the name of love, their values may subtly align with those of the dominant partner.

In such relationships, there is often a lack of personal space; we focus solely on giving love while neglecting the need for independence. When this balance is lost, separation becomes inevitable, driven by the awakening of self-awareness in the more dependent partner. The process of separation, though painful, is an effort to seek a more equal and healthy relationship. True love can only exist when we are independent individuals first.

In the work, two figures, dressed in gender-neutral clothing, use body movements to express the transition from extreme intimacy to gradual separation. The hemp rope symbolizes the emotional bond and the constraints between them, while also representing the lasting influence one person has on shaping the other’s identity.
